If you want to get your hands on a Zodiac weapon in FFXIV, be prepared for a long journey. While they are originally from A Realm Reborn, they are still worth getting if you want some bragging rights and something cool to show off. Here is how you get yourself a Zodiac weapon in the game.
How to get a Zodiac Weapon in FFXIV
There are quite a few different Zodiac weapons in FFXIV, sitting at a grand total of ten Zodiac weapons. This lines up with most of the job classes available in FFXIV, and it means that you will have a different starting area for each quest for the most part.
The first thing you’ll want to do is make sure that you’ve completed The Ultimate Weapon main scenario quest and completed every single class and job quest for the chosen job that you are chasing the Zodiac weapon for.
Next, you will want to find Nedrick, on Vesper Bay, Western Thanalan (X:12.0, Y:14.3). They will give you the first quest to start this long grind, named ‘The Weaponsmith of Legend’. You will be sent between a few NPCs, but then you will be sent to an NPC named Gerolt, and they become one of the important NPCs you speak to throughout the entire process.
Gerolt will then give you his own quest, named ‘A Relic Reborn’ where you have to seek out a relic in a Beast Tribe stronghold. Depending on your job depends on where you will find the relic. You will find Gerolt in Hyrstmill, North Shroud (X:30.2, Y:20.2).
Job | Location |
Bard | Natalan, Coerthas Highlands |
Black Mage | U’Ghamaro Mines, Outer La Noscea |
Dragoon | Natalan, Coerthas Highlands |
Monk | Zahar’ak, Southern Thanalan |
Ninja | Sapsa Spawning Grounds, Western La Noscea |
Paladin | Sylphlands, East Shroud |

Scholar | Sapsa Spawning Grounds, Western La Noscea |
Summoner | Zahar’ak, Southern Thanalan |
Warrior | U’Ghamaro Mines, Outer La Noscea |
White Mage | U’Ghamaro Mines, Outer La Noscea |
Now that you’ve retrieved the relic, you’ll then have to use a different weapon as a template for your relic. You’ll have to meld Materia into the weapon. You can buy these types of weapons from the Market Board if you don’t have them to hand, or you can have someone craft them for you. Alternatively, you can craft them yourself, the choice is up to you.
The weapon will also require two specific types of Materia to be melded into the weapon. You can do it yourself if you are levelled up high enough in that area of crafting, or you can have someone else do it for you. You can also speak with a Materia Melder NPC.
Here are the weapons and Materia that you will need for each job.
Job | Weapon | Materia |
Bard | Longarm’s Composite Bow | Heavens’ Eye Materia III |
Black Mage | Sanguine Scepter | Savage Might Materia III |
Dragoon | Champion’s Lance | Savage Aim Materia III |

You will now have to kill three types of enemies eight times for a grand total of 24 kills.

Getting the Animus Weapon in FFXIV
Now, you will have a big grind to get your Zodiac weapon. You have to complete The Trials of the Braves. Jalzahn will give you this quest, and then send you to Mor Dhona. You then meet G’jusana (X:22.9, Y:7.3) who is an important NPC for this part.
Once you’ve spoken to G’jusana, you need to purchase nine Books for 100 Tomestones of Poetics. These books contain the tasks that you need to complete. When you are completing these tasks, you need to have your Relic weapon equipped.
Each book will ask you to do the following:
- Complete three Dungeons
- Defeat 10 different enemies, three times each
- Complete three FATEs
- Complete three Levequests
However, you can only have one Book at a time, and it has to be fully completed and turned in to G’jusana before you can buy another one. If you happen to buy another book before you’ve completed your current one, all progress will be lost.
This will give you the Animus Weapon.
Obtaining the Novus weapon in FFXIV
Next up on the list is completing the quest ‘Celestial Radiance’ which is given to you by Jalzahn in Hyrstmill, North Shroud. This only has to be completed once. You will need to buy three Superior Enchanted Ink from Auriana in Mor Dhona which will cost you 25 Poetics. By giving in the Ink, you will get given a Sphere Scroll, which is needed for the next part of the Zodiac weapon questline.
The next quest is ‘Star Light, Star Bright’, which is again, given to you by Jalzahn. This step involves you melding materia onto your weapon. Be prepared to get a lot of materia. You will need 75 materia in total, and 75 Alexandrite. You can use a maximum of 44 materia of a single stat type and 31 materia of a second stat type. You will also have to start with the lowest scaling and work your way up the ranks, starting from I and going upwards.
As you are melding your materia, there is a chance that your materia will start to fail as you meld it, so make sure you purchase spares just in case.
To get your Alexandrite, there are multiple ways in which you can obtain it.
- Complete Level 50 or below FATEs with your Relic Weapon equipped
- Purchase for 50 Allied Seals from your Grand Company Headquarters
- Treasure from Mysterious Maps
- ‘Morbid Motivation’ daily quest – complete Duty Roulette: Level 50/60/70/80 Dungeon
- Purchase for 75 Tomestones of Poetics from Auriana
Luckily, if your materia melding fails, you don’t lose any of your Alexandrite, so 75 is safe to collect.
This will evolve your weapon into the Novus weapon.

You’ll now be onto the step to evolve your weapon into a Nexus Weapon. You’ll get a new quest from Jalzahn named ‘Mmmmmm, Soulglazed Relics’.
