Changing Tera Types in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet can add an extra layer of strategy to your Pokemon battles.
You can find rarer Tera Types in Tera Raids. But if you’ve lovingly trained and travelled with your team, you might not want to trade them out for a different type. Good news! You can change any Pokemon‘s Tera type to the exact one you’re after.
Here’s everything you need to know about Tera Shards, and how to change Tera types in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet.
- Here’s what time you can jump into the Charizard Tera Raid in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet.
Pokemon Scarlet And Violet: What Are Tera Types?
Pokemon Scarlet and Violet’s Tera Types are a brand new gimmick introduced in Generation Nine. Terastallsing allows you to change the type of your Pokemon, as well as give moves the same type a handy STAB (same-type-attack-bonus).
Tera types are usually the same type as your Pokemon has naturally. For example, a Sprigatito will normally always have a Grass Tera Type. However, that’s not always the case! You can change your Pokemon’s Tera Type to offset certain weaknesses.
How To Obtain Tera Shards
If you want to change your Pokemon’s Tera Type in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, you’ll need to obtain 50 Tera Shards. This is a rare item that requires some graft to collect. The best ways we’ve found so far are by completing Tera Raids of the same type you’re looking to change to and braving Area Zero for items on the ground.
For example, if you want to convert your Pokemon into a Dragon type, you’ll need to collect 50 Dragon Tera Shards.
If you want to convert your Pokemon into a Fairy type, you’ll need 50 Fairy Tera Shards. You get the picture.
Annoyingly, even five-star raids only drop around four to six Tera Shards. You’ll need to keep coming back to farm the required amount.
How To Change Tera Type Using Tera Shards
Have you finally got your 50 Tera Shards? It’s time to fly to Medali for a pilgrimage to see Larry, the lovable everyday man. Except we’re not actually here to see Larry (although we definitely should be). We’re heading to Treasury Eatery, the restaurant where we first fought Larry. Fly to the Medali East Pokecenter and walk right.
If you’ve defeated Larry once before, the chef behind the counter will ask you if you “Want to change any Pokemon’s Tera Type?”. You’ll get 50 Normal type Tera Shards for your troubles.
Hint: Complete Hassel’s social link at the Academy to receive 50 Dragon Tera Shards.
And you’re all set! Terastallising is a fantastic way to surprise your enemies and turn the tide of battle. Give it a go!
