Splatoon 3 Disconnect Penalty: How It Works
Like most online games, Splatoon 3 has systems in place to deal with a situation in which a player disconnects from the match. However, in typical Nintendo fashion, Splatoon 3 has a unique approach to handling disconnections. First of all, should any player disconnect mid-match, the game will end for everyone immediately. Rather than allow other players to join a match in progress, add a bot, or simply allow players to continue without their disconnected teammate, Splatoon 3 just immediately cancels the match. Any players who disconnected will receive a loss, and the match will not count for all other players.
There are a series of penalties incurred for disconnecting. Mercifully, you only get a warning for your first disconnection. Disconnections can happen to anyone, and the disconnect penalties should only punish those who intentionally disconnect regularly. After your first warning, disconnections come with a five-minute ban, still reasonable as it is possible to have a few disconnections happen beyond your control. Consistent disconnections will eventually begin to result in hour-long bans, which are intended to punish those who leave games intentionally.

Splatoon 3 Disconnect Penalty: How To Avoid
To avoid getting banned, you need to ensure you are playing Splatoon 3 on a stable internet connection. If your internet has regular disconnections, you could be putting yourself at risk of facing timed bans from Splatoon 3, as well as most online games. If your internet is relatively stable, yet your console often disconnects, there are some things you can do.
First of all, if you are connecting for Switch to the internet over wifi then it can help to be close to the modem. Sometimes, being near the edge of the range of your wifi can lead to an inconsistent connection. Either play closer to the modem or bring the modem to you.
Alternatively, if you have a newer Switch dock or a network adapter for the older models, you can connect an ethernet cable and play over a wired connection. These are much more stable and reliable than wifi, and a great solution if you are having connection issues.
